Vice President Kamala Harris pushed back against the false claim repeated by former President Donald Trump in their Sept. 10 debate that some states and Democrats supported “post-birth” abortions, or killing babies after they are born.
Killing anyone after birth is illegal. No states have or are considering laws that allow for the killing of a baby after birth.
When asked about her plans around abortion rights during the ABC News Presidential Debate, Harris pointed this out, and supported reinstating protections formerly offered by the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022.
“Nowhere in America is a woman carrying a pregnancy to term and asking for an abortion — that is not happening. It’s insulting to the women of America,” Harris said.
She described the fallout of new abortion restrictions enacted by states after the high court’s Dobbs decision left the issue in their hands, including the challenge of women accessing care or having to travel out of state to receive, and doctors fearing providing abortion or miscarriage care for fear of prosecution.
According to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll, more than two-thirds of Americans say they will watch all or most of the debate. While many voters have already made up their minds, 14 percent of Americans say the debate will have a great impact on which candidate they choose.
